The latest firmware update for the PlayStation 5 has implemented changes that significantly affect jailbreaking, complicating users' ability to access their digital libraries after taking their systems offline.

As detailed earlier today by the well-known hacker Lance McDonald, who specializes in the Souls series, the update altered the "Restore Licenses" screen. Now, licenses can only be downloaded for games already installed on the console. Previously, users could restore licenses for all owned games, including those not currently installed. Consequently, once a PlayStation 5 is taken offline, users will struggle to play most of the digital games they've purchased and may resort to using pirated backups. This update will also hinder users from backing up games to share with others. While this may not pose significant problems for legitimate users, it will make jailbreaking the console and modding games considerably more challenging.

The most recent major firmware update for the PlayStation 5 is version 24.06, which introduced several new features, including a Welcome hub—a customizable space where users can add various widgets. Additionally, the update brought a new Party Share feature, personalized 3D audio profiles, and a revamped Remote Play setting. Shortly after, another update was released to address issues affecting specific games, such as Final Fantasy XVI, which arose from changes made in the 24.06 update.
